Unveiling Jihad: Robert Spencer on Media Blackouts, Historical Myths, and Surviving Assassination Attempts

New podcast episode...

Today on Atlantic Playbook, Robert Spencer, author of 28 books and a director of Jihad Watch, discusses the origins and mission of Jihad Watch, a news and commentary website he started in 2003 to address the media blackout on jihad-related news and the ideology behind jihad terror attacks.

His latest, "Muhammad, a Critical Biography," will be released September 10th. This book examines the early Islamic sources on Muhammad, highlighting contradictions and suggesting much of the traditional narrative is myth rather than historical fact.

Spencer's previous work, "Did Muhammad Exist?," questions the traditional story of Islam's origins, arguing that early references to Muhammad may have been more titular than specific to the Islamic prophet.

Towards the end of the episode Spencer shares his numerous death threats and his survived assassination attempts—one in 2015 during a Muhammad art exhibit in Texas and another in 2017 when he was poisoned in Iceland.

Despite these threats, Spencer remains committed to his work.
